High blood pressure and labor induction

The Wednesday before my second son was born, I went to my regular appt and my blood pressure was high. I was told to get into bed and stay there with my husband checking my blood pressure. On Friday it was high again and so they saw me again in the office. I was 2cm at that point and 70% effaced. By Friday night I was running a low grade fever that continued through the weekend. By Sunday it was higher and Tylenol was not bringing it down so my husband called my Dr. He said to go to L&D and they would monitor the baby for a while to make sure all was OK.JJ

We got to L&D about 5pm on Sunday. Our baby looked good but my blood pressure was all over the place again. They ran some blood work and my liver enzymes were up and platelets were pretty low. At that point they decided to induce since I was 38 weeks and it looked like I was
developing pre-eclampsia.

Pitocin started at 7.30pm. The Dr. came in and broke my water at 8.30pm. Contractions were strong and about 2-3 minutes apart. I got an epidural just after 9pm. At one point they said I may not be able to have one because of the low platelets (that affects the clotting of your blood). But they ran an additional blood test and determined that although my platelets were low, they were still functioning properly. Thank Goodness because the pitocin makes your contractions so strong and fast, I might have just killed someone without an epidural

By 11pm I was feeling pressure and so the nurse checked me. I was 4cm but the baby’s head was completely molded into my cervix and very low already. Then the baby’s heartrate started to drop with each contraction and he had us worried. At one point he dropped off the monitor for
about 3 minutes. They put me on oxygen and decided to put an internal monitor in baby’s head to track his heartrate better. When they put the monitor in, I was already at 10cm. I went from 4cm to 10cm in 20 minutes.

The Dr. was called in and I pushed once and he crowned. Several more small pushes and he was there at 12.37am on Monday morning. The cord was wrapped tightly around his neck and had to be cut to even get him out. We were very lucky that he arrived so quickly because he was losing oxygen with each contraction. He was pretty bruised on his face and head but he recovered well. My second little guy had arrived safely into the world
